To make remote working work long term, you need to find a sustainable and productive pattern.

remote working productivity

Given the number of firms looking at long-term remote or hybrid work, now is the time to re-examine how you are set up to work at home and the strategies that might work best for remote working.

It can be a struggle to stay focused throughout the day when surrounded by the distractions of home. Here are some tips how to keep motivated and focused.

  1. To focus on the daily tasks at hand, rather than reacting as things happen, it is important to get into a home/work routine. Set start and end times for your work and home responsibilities.
  2. In the morning, write down clear achievable goals and priorities for each day.
  3. Be aware of getting distracted by new issues that arise during the day that are not important.
  4. Separation is key to finding the balance between work life and home life. Try to establish a separate work space that you can go to, such as a spare bedroom or a home office. If that’s just not possible, make sure your work equipment and paperwork is tidied away and out of sight when you’re ready for ‘home time’.
  5. Ensure you have a proper desk set up with office chair and good broadband connection.
  6. If possible, take a short stroll before you start your work.
  7. Don’t look at your work day as a continuous stretch of time: break it up into blocks of time and divide portions of work for each block of time.
  8. Be aware of energy levels as there is a strong link between productivity and a drop in focus. Taking a quick break from your screen can help you to get over a slump.
  9. Be mindful of how you spend your time by matching tasks to your energy levels. Low level administration tasks should be completed when there is noise in the background or later in the day.
  10. If you have a challenging task requiring concentration, early in the day is when focus is usually high.
