Run for Council Election and Notice of AGM

The Law Society AGM will take place on

With 16 places available in this year’s general election and two places in the provincial elections – one in Connaught and one in Munster - it’s a great time to consider running as a candidate and be involved in making key decisions that shape the future of your profession. It’s important that we have as diverse and inclusive Council membership as the profession it represents so I would encourage you to consider contributing your valuable expertise and life experience for the benefit of your colleagues and the public.

Please note key dates relating to the Council elections and for submitting a motion to the AGM:

  • Final date for the receipt of nominations for election – 5.00pm on 25 September 2023

  • Final date for the receipt of notices of motion for the AGM – 5.00pm on 12 October 2023

  • Final date for the submission of canvassing literature – 5.00pm on 12 October 2023

  • Close of poll date – 5.00pm on 2 November 2023

  • Law Society AGM – 9 November 2023

Nomination of candidates

From 1 September this year, the nomination forms for the Law Society council election are available electronically – no paper forms will be issued. Forms for both the annual election and the provincial election can be accessed and submitted by members through a secure area on the Law Society website, using your solicitor number and lawsociety.ie password. If you need login assistance, please contact us by email at webmaster@lawsociety.ie.

For your information, the Law Society’s Bye-laws 6(6), 6(7) and 6(8) relate to the nomination date and close of poll date, nomination of candidates and receipt of nomination forms. 

If your practice address is within the province of either Connaught or Munster, you are also entitled to nominate candidates for election as the provincial delegate for your particular province. The existing provincial delegates for Leinster and Ulster continue to hold office for a second year by virtue of Bye-law 6(5)(b).

See also the provisions of Bye-law 6(7)(c) which provides that any member of the Law Society may nominate no more than a total of two candidates whether for the annual election or a provincial election. As per Bye-law 6(7)(c), current office-holders (President, Senior Vice President and Junior Vice President) of the Council may not nominate any candidate(s) for election as members of the Council.

Canvassing literature – 500 words

Per Bye-law 6(15) the Law Society, in electronically making available and accessible an annual election voting form to each member of the Law Society entitled to vote, shall concurrently electronically make available and accessible canvassing literature presented by a candidate to the Law Society through the website. 

If you wish to provide canvassing material, submit no more than 500 words to me at councilelections@lawsociety.ie by Thursday 12 October 2023

Motions for AGM

The text of Bye-law 4(3) provides for the receipt by the Law Society of notice in writing of motions for the AGM. Each notice must be signed by at least two members of the Law Society and must be received by me at least 28 days before the date of the AGM (ie received by Thursday 12 October 2023). 

Members who wish to submit motions should download and complete the form at the link below and send to the Director General at Blackhall Place,Dublin 7, D07 VY24 or by email at agm@lawsociety.ie.
