Calcutta Run raises €285,000 for homeless charities in Dublin and Kolkata

1,050 legal professionals help sprint past 10,000km target.

Today, Thursday 17 December 2020, the Law Society of Ireland presented 鈧285,000 to its Calcutta Run charity partners, Peter McVerry Trust and the Hope Foundation, at an online cheque handover ceremony.

Organised by the Law Society of Ireland, the 22nd annual Calcutta Run took place virtually for the first time between 30 October and 8 November 2020. Over 1,000 members of the legal profession, their family and friends were asked to run, walk, cycle and hike to collectively reach 10,000km - the distance between Dublin and Kolkata.

Dedication and commitment

President of the Law Society James Cahill said, 鈥2020 has been an unpredictable year, but the commitment of the legal profession to help fight homelessness is certain.鈥

鈥淥nce again the solicitors鈥 profession has shown dedication and collegiality coming together in support of the Calcutta Run, successfully reaching 10,000km and even surpassing this year鈥檚 fundraising target by 50 per cent,鈥 he said.

鈥榃e are proud to continue to support our charity partners, the Hope Foundation and Peter McVerry Trust,鈥 said Mr Cahill. 鈥淭he generosity and enthusiasm of the solicitors鈥 profession will ensure our charity partners can support a number of their on-going essential projects into 2021.鈥

Partner charities

Founder and Director of the Hope Foundation, Maureen Forrest attended the online presentation and said this year鈥檚 first virtual Calcutta Run is a testament to the commitment of the solicitors鈥 profession in the fight against homelessness.

鈥淭he Hope Foundation is delighted to continue our partnership with the Calcutta Run, which helps us fulfil our promise to care for the children in Kolkata 鈥 a promise that has never been so important to keep.鈥

"The Calcutta Run directly supports our Hive Emergency Response Unit, the Bhorukha Snehneer Home, Kasba girls鈥 home and our Hope hospital. We thank the Calcutta Run for your continued support,鈥 she said.

Pat Doyle, CEO of Peter McVerry Trust said, 鈥淭he Calcutta Run is Peter McVerry Trust鈥檚 longest running external partnership and we are delighted to continue our work with them again this year.鈥

鈥淲e appreciate the difficult challenges this year has brought, but with the Calcutta Run鈥檚 support we are able to provide new homes across Ireland giving people and families a key to their own door.鈥
