Scam email from fake legal firm

30/01/2018 16:46:05

The Society has been made aware of a scam email received by a member of the profession, enclosing what is purported to be a Memorandum of Sales.

See a copy of the cam email below - the solicitor's name has been amended for anonymity reasons.

This email requests the solicitor to review the attachment and to revert. If opened, this attachment is likely to result in malware being installed on the computer.

Members of the profession are advised that they should always review the sender鈥檚 details before acting on any email.  In this case it would be noticed that that the practice name includes 鈥淟LP鈥 (Limited Liability Partnership), which is not available in the Republic of Ireland, however the address is in Dublin. This should immediately raise concerns as to the veracity of the email. Before acting on an email where a suspicion arises, members of the profession are advised to contact the purported sender by a secure means, for example, phonecall or post. In this case, the solicitor tried to contact the solicitors' firm at the phone number provided but was unable to make contact.

If the attachment is opened, it is advised that you immediately contact your IT provider and ensure that your system is checked for, and, if necessary, cleaned of any malware found.
