Email scam - solicitor's practice email compromised
16/10/2018 09:31:20The Society has learned of cases where a compromised practice email system sent phishing emails to saved contacts.
These emails would appear to be genuine to the receiver as they are being sent from the sending practice’s email system.
Members of the profession are advised that they should never open an attachment that they are not expecting, even if it appears to come from a reputable source. If an unexpected email is received it is recommended that contact be made with the sender by phone to ensure it is genuine. Ensure that the phone number for the sender is obtained through the Law Directory, phone book etc. – do not use the phone number contained within the email.
If a solicitor has opened such an attachment they are advised to change their email passwords immediately, contact their IT providers for further advice and ensure that your system is checked for, and, if necessary, cleaned of any malware found.
