Time Management Tips for Job Seekers

Tips on Time Management for Job Seekers

Time Management is crucial in any job search. Small practical steps can be taken to keep you focused and efficient in your job search.

Work in Short Stints

Working in short stints prevents you getting mentally or physically distracted. Peg a time limit to each task. This prevents your task from dragging on and eating into other time already reserved.

Prioritise

It is important to prioritise if you have a lot to do or if you feel overwhelmed in the task list. Do important tasks before they become urgent. Batch similar tasks together so that you create a helpful synergy and momentum in your work.

Zone Your Day

Decide on the best time of the day to tackle each batch of tasks. You may be most productive at a particular time of the day.

Use a Wall Chart

Visually, by use of a spreadsheet or chart, remind yourself of the goals and target dates ahead. Ask someone suitably qualified for help if you don’t have the necessary skills for a particular task. Do not allow delay.

Block out Potential Distractions

Using social media to seek work is a necessity but you can easily get distracted by tweets, facebook notifications and emails. Turn off notifications that are likely to distract. Turn off your computer from time to time. For some tasks, such as updating your CV, print out your CV and hand write your adjustments. When you are satisfied with the adjustments turn on the computer and start typing again.

Try removing yourself from other distractions at home. Perhaps you might consider spending time in a quieter working environment . A library, for example, has strict codes of silence in place for the benefit of all users.

Use an Alarm Clock

It is easy to lose track of time. Place a clock in front of you while working. Set the alarm function on your clock so that you can immerse yourself fully in the task at hand.

Leave Time Between Tasks

Do not pack tasks too closely together. Leave time to wrap up one task and prepare for the next.
