New judges for Court of Appeal, High Court

President Higgins yesterday (29 September) appointed Mr Justice Alexander Owens to the Court of Appeal and Mr Justice Seán Gillane to the High Court.

The President appoints judges on the advice of the Government.

Mr Justice Gillane was nominated by the Government in July to fill a High Court vacancy that arose due to the elevation of Mr Justice Denis McDonald to the Court of Appeal in December last year.

He was among eight new members of the judiciary who were the first to be announced since a new system of judicial appointments came into effect earlier this year.

Mr Justice Owens, who was nominated in July, was previously a judge of the High Court.
