The Government has agreed to bring forward legislation to address the issue of a passenger cap at Dublin Airport.
Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien said that legislation would bring “much-needed clarity” to all stakeholders.
The current cap of 32 million passengers a year has been strongly criticised by airlines and business groups.
The Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) submitted an application in December 2023 to raise the passenger cap and for the development of several projects to boost capacity – including new piers and aircraft stands, along with a new Integrated transport centre.
The Department of Transport said that, In parallel with DAA moving ahead with the planning application, the minister now intended to progress “a targeted legislative solution” to address the passenger cap.
“This Government recognises the strategic importance of Dublin Airport as our primary international gateway, and the contribution it makes to our economy,” Minister O’Brien said.
The department said that it would also move forward with commitments to review the National Aviation Policy and develop a long-term strategy for Irish airports.
