Official figures show that recorded incidents of crime fell in most categories in the year to the second quarter (Q2) of 2025.
There were big falls in the number of recorded homicides – down 42% – kidnapping (16%), and incidents linked to robbery, extortion, and hijacking, which fell by 14%.
Incidents linked to burglary were down 7%, while fraud offences fell by 6%, according to (CSO).
The figures show, however, that the number of sexual offences recorded rose by 17% during the 12 months, while offences linked to public order were up 6%.
Overall, ten of the 14 crime categories showed decreases over the 12 months.
The category covering attempts or threats to murder, assaults, harassments, and related offences showed a 4% increase over the 12-month period.
The number of victims of such incidents during Q2 was little changed compared with a year earlier at 6,101, with the number of male victims up by 2% and the number of female victims down by 3%.
The CSO points out that the fraud figures cover only incidents directly reported to An Garda Síochána by members of the public, and not referrals from financial institutions, where a backlog has affected the data.
Crime figures for the four-year period from 2022 to 2025 show that the biggest increase was in theft, with a 30% increase to 74,292 in the 12 months to Q2 this year. The CSO says, however, that theft figures have been “relatively stable” for the past two years.
