Dr Ciarán Seoighe has been appointed as director general of Forensic Science Ireland (FSI), with effect from 6 October.
FSI provides a scientific service to the criminal-justice system by analysing samples from crime scenes and providing expert evidence in criminal trials.
Dr Seoighe was most recently the deputy chief executive of Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland.
Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan described the appointment as “a significant new chapter” for FSI as it celebrates 50 years in existence this year.
Dr Seoighe succeeds Chris Enright, who had led the organisation for seven years.
Dr Geraldine O’Donnell has served as acting director general since January this year.
Dr Seoighe joined Science Foundation Ireland in 2018, before it amalgamated with the Irish Research Council to form Taighde Éireann in 2024.
Before this, he had spent nearly two decades as a global management consultant advising leading organisations on technology, communications, finance, and other issues.
