Views sought on EU ‘gig economy’ directive

The Government has opened a public consultation and survey on an EU directive aimed at improving conditions for platform workers, or those working in the ‘gig economy’.

It covers people working through digital platforms in sectors such as delivery, translation, data input, babysitting, elderly care, or taxi-driving.

The introduces measures to help determine the correct employment status of platform workers.

It also sets out rules to increase transparency, fairness, and accountability in the use of algorithmic management systems – including provisions for human oversight.

Additionally, it strengthens personal data protection for people doing platform work.

Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade, and Employment Alan Dillon described the directive as “an important step in making platform work fairer, safer, and more transparent”, adding that it would also bring greater clarity on employment status.

The department is on the EU measure from stakeholders and interested parties by no later than 5pm on Monday 3 November.
