An Coimisiún Pleanála has given the go-ahead for the Luas Finglas project, which will extend Dublin’s Luas green line by almost 4km from Broombridge to Charlestown.
The planning body’s decision to approve a Railway Order enables the project to move towards procurement and construction.
“The commission considered that the proposed scheme would deliver a key component for achieving the policy objectives of the National Planning Framework and will enable delivery of compact sustainable growth in Dublin city,” stated.
“It would also provide safer and improved infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists and would deliver sustainable connectivity and integration with other transport services. The public realm along the tram corridor would also be improved,” it added.
Welcoming the decision, Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien described the decision as “a major milestone in expanding Dublin’s public transport network”.
“By reducing journey times, the project will also support the development of housing and businesses along the route.,” the minister added.
The extension will include four new stops: Charlestown, St Margaret’s Road, Finglas Village, and St Helena’s.
