Solicitor Rose Wall set for IHREC role

Solicitor Rose Wall is among six people recommended by the Government for appointment to the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC).

The announcement comes after an open competition held by the Public Appointments Service (PAS).

The commission members must now be approved through resolutions of both Houses of the Oireachtas before being formally appointed by the President.

The proposed commission members are:

  • Sam Blanckensee,
  • Cathryn Costello,
  • Patricia Munatsi,
  • Rose Wall,
  • Adam Harris (re-appointment), and
  • Rosaleen McDonagh (re-appointment).

‘Significant expertise’

Wall is a solicitor and consultant specialising in environmental justice, who founded Ireland’s Centre for Environmental Justice and is a current member of the board of Community Foundation Ireland.

Munatsi-Mangwiza is a human-rights lawyer, who is a member of the Government’s Expert Advisory Committee on Racial Equality and Racism.

Blanckensee is the current equality officer at Maynooth University, while Costello is professor of Global Refugee and Migration Law at University College Dublin.

“These proposed appointments will bring significant practical, academic, and human-rights experience and expertise to the work of the commission at a time when our mandate has significantly increased in many areas,” said chief commissioner Liam Herrick.
