Counselling research to show ‘cultural shift’

Law Society Psychological Services is to present what it describes as “ground-breaking” research on the influence of early psychological support on solicitors.

The research explores the experiences of trainee solicitors who accessed the Law Society’s free counselling service between 2015 and 2023.

The Law Society says that the study, which draws on anonymised feedback from over 500 trainees, highlights “a meaningful cultural shift” within the legal profession.

Proactive engagement

It finds that trainees reported engaging with counselling not only during periods of heightened stress, but also proactively for personal insight and self-development.

“This reflects an emerging view of mental-health support as a constructive and normal aspect of professional life,” Law Society Psychological Services says.

The full report, which will be available from Wednesday 19 November, will be launched on the same day in the Presidents' Hall, Law Society, Blackhall Place, Dublin 7 (6.30pm to 8.30pm).
