UCD law student wins Matheson bursary

Law firm Matheson has named Tara Grattan as the winner of the 2025 Tim Scanlon Corporate Law Bursary.

Now in its fourth year, the annual bursary honours the memory of late Matheson partner Tim Scanlon. It is open to undergraduate and postgraduate law students.

The call for entries earlier this year asked applicants to submit an essay discussing the impact of Brexit on corporate regulation in Ireland.

‘Insightful’

The judges said that the winner’s “insightful and well-researched entry demonstrated a clear understanding of the relevant issues and the impact of Brexit on Irish businesses”.

Currently a third-year Law with Irish student in University College Dublin (UCD), Grattan has been awarded a place on Matheson's Summer Internship Programme, a €5,000 bursary, and, in appreciation of Tim Scanlon's love for the arts, a piece of art by Irish artist Niamh Flanagan.

Matheson managing partner Michael Jackson described her essay as “a worthy winner” of this year’s bursary.

Grattan said that winning the scholarship had been “genuinely transformative” for her.

“At such a pivotal stage in my legal journey, it has not only opened doors, but also renewed my confidence in what’s possible,” she stated.
