Clarke embarrassed by overseas judge training

At a court reform seminar at the Aula Max in NUIG on 17 January, Chief Justice Frank Clarke said that inconsistency in sentencing around the country is a result of financial cutbacks making it 鈥渧irtually impossible鈥 to develop training systems for the judiciary.

Data

He said that a funding proposal will be submitted to the government to finance the correlation of sentencing data and make it available to the judiciary, alongside enhanced training levels.

The Chief Justice said the current 鈧300,000 annual judicial training budget needs to be quadrupled.

'Embarrassment'

The judiciary have travelled to Scotland to avail of training there, a situation he described as 鈥渁 source of some embarrassment鈥.
