Cumann Gaelach an Dlí Chumann

Cumann Gaelach an Dlí ChumannCumann Gaelach an Dlí Chumann has been going ó neart go neart ó tús na bliana. An Cumann Gaelach is a vibrant space for Irish speaking trainee solicitors. This year for Seachtain na Gaeilge the Law School hosted many events including a Pop up Gaeltacht, Tae agus Plé sa Council Chamber, Tag Rugby agus Tennis as Gaeilge.

An Cumann Gaelach ventured further afield too with a group of thirty trainees going to the Irish Film Institute to see an Cailín Ciúin, an Oscar nominated Irish language movie. The Ardán Oscailte / Open Mic Night in Club Chonradh na Gaeilge was a great success where a number of trainees sang songs, told stories, read poetry as Gaeilge, and finished the night with a céilí.

Diversity and Inclusion Society

In March, the Law School’s Diversity and Inclusion Society hosted speakers Maria Joyce (National Traveller Women's Forum), solicitor David Joyce, and Patrick Reilly (Pavee Point) at an event to mark the sixth anniversary of the legal recognition by the State of Traveller ethnicity.

Maria Joyce leads the forum mission to empower Traveller women to achieve full equality, and have their identity celebrated. In her address, Maria said that the Law Society sending out young solicitors with an open mind and a willingness to engage with Travellers who came across their path was really important. She urged trainees to remember that it could be difficult for Travellers to access legal advice or engage with legal services.

Winners on tour

Ailbhe Noonan (Arthur Cox) and Gavin Dowd (A&L Goodbody), winners of the Irish Times Debate final in February this year are flying the flag for Ireland in a debating tour of the US. The duo have competed in several debates in each state visited travelling through Tennessee (Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU)), Colorado (Metropolitan State University of Denver), and Washington (Whitworth University) debating the future of nuclear energy, the need for public healthcare, the potential for a universal language and many more motions. In Oregon, they had the pleasure of debating students in George Fox University and the privilege of debating inmates in Oregon State Penitentiary. Both agreed that debating in the prison was a highlight of the tour as it provided the unique opportunity to engage with those who are incarcerated and hear their perspectives.
