Fake email alert

The Society has been made aware of a scam email received by a member of the profession which was purported to be sent from the “Law Society”.

This email requests the solicitor to click on a link to review 鈥渋mportant information鈥, stating that it was for their 鈥渦rgent attention鈥 and to revert. If opened, this attachment is likely to result in malware being installed onto the computer.

Members of the profession are advised that they should always review the sender鈥檚 details before acting on any e-mail. In this case it would be noticed that that the sender鈥檚 name is 鈥淟aw Society鈥, whereas the address is 鈥james@lieblawoffice.com鈥. This should immediately raise concerns as to the veracity of the email.

Before acting on an e-mail where a suspicion arises, members of the profession are advised to contact the purported sender by a secure means, such as telephone or post.  Members of the profession are also advised to be sceptical of any unexpected email that states that matters are 鈥渦rgent鈥 or require 鈥渋mmediate attention鈥. This supposed urgency is often used as ruse in an attempt to get the recipient to act without due thought and review.

If the attachment is opened, it is advised that you immediately contact your IT provider and ensure that your system is checked for, and, if necessary, cleaned of any malware found.
