Email scam - Law Society re P1 & P2 forms

05/12/2017 15:39:00

The Society has been made aware of a scam email received by members of the profession in Ireland, purportedly from the Law Society. The email is set out below.

The email claims that the Law Society is updating its database and requests the reader to open the attachment and complete the forms. It also contains a warning that failure to return completed forms within the relevant timeframe would result in the solicitor鈥檚 record being taken off the site.

Please note that this email is not from the Law Society. Opening the attachment is likely to result in malware being installed on that machine. The profession is also advised that they should always review the sender鈥檚 details before acting on any email. In this case, it would be noticed that the sender purports to be LawSociety.org.uk, whereas, the email address of the Law Society is lawsociety.ie.  This should immediately raise concerns as to the veracity of the email.  Where such concerns arise the profession are advised to contact the purported sender by a secure means, for example, phonecall or post.
